People around the world have demanded justice for the actions taken by the United States leadership in the Middle East since 9/11. Can America's leaders commit war crimes such as torture and imprisonment without jury? Does American leadership exist outside of the boundaries of international law? There are many who say "no!" One particular group is a Malaysian tribunal that has attempted to hold U.S. leadership accountable for its actions. America's war in Iraq, started in 2003, was responsible for the deaths of anywhere between 1-2 million people. (Physicians For Social Responsibility NGO, 2015, PDF)

A tribunal in Malaysia has found former U.S President George Bush and his Vice President Dick Cheney guilty of war crimes, as well as six other members of Bush's administration. Bush, Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and five of their legal advisers were tried in their absence and found guilty on May 12th 2012.

The War Crimes Tribunal judge, Tan Sri Lamin Mohd Yunus, delivered the verdict and stated that reparations should be given to the war crimes victims. These victims told a panel of five about their suffering at the hands of U.S. soldiers and contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One of these victims, Briton Moazzam Begg, is a former Guantanamo Detainee. He says that he was beaten, put in a hood and left in solitary confinement. Another is an Iraqi woman named Jameelah Abbas Hameedi who said she was stripped and humiliated in the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

Transcripts of the trial have been sent to the International Criminal Court, the United Nations and the Security Council. A member of the prosecution team, Professor Francis Boyle of Illinois University's College of Law, said he was hopeful that similar trials would be held around the world.
